Pericyma

Description

Pericyma is a genus of moths belonging to the family Erebidae. These insects are known for their potential to act as significant pests in various forest and urban landscapes, particularly affecting specific deciduous trees.

The species Pericyma squalens is particularly notable for its impact on trees of the genus Robinia, commonly known as black locust. During outbreaks, the larvae (caterpillars) can cause extensive defoliation, stripping the trees of their leaves and causing significant stress to the host plant.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Typically, the insect overwinters in the pupal stage within the leaf litter or topsoil. Adult moths emerge in the spring to lay eggs on the host foliage. The larvae develop through several instars, feeding voraciously before pupating, often completing multiple generations annually.

Damage is characterized by the consumption of leaf tissue, which can range from skeletonization to total defoliation of the canopy. Persistent infestation weakens the tree, leading to stunted growth, branch dieback, and increased susceptibility to secondary pests and various pathogens that exploit the stressed host.

  • Regular monitoring of adult populations using pheromone traps.
  • Application of biological insecticides containing Bacillus thuringiensis.
  • Targeted use of systemic or contact insecticides when population thresholds are exceeded.
  • Conservation and encouragement of natural biological control agents, such as predatory birds and parasitoid wasps.
