Sugarcane planthopper

The sugarcane planthopper (Perkinsiella saccharicida) is an insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Delphacidae. It is a major pest in sugarcane-growing regions, known for both its direct feeding damage and its role as a biological vector for plant pathogens.

This pest exclusively targets sugarcane plants, preferring to reside in sheltered areas such as the leaf sheath and the base of the leaves. By inserting their stylets into the vascular tissue, they extract phloem sap, which deprives the plant of vital nutrients required for proper stalk development and sugar accumulation.

The biological cycle consists of eggs, five nymphal instars, and adults. Females utilize an ovipositor to insert eggs into the leaf tissue or the midrib. The duration of the life cycle is highly dependent on ambient temperature and moisture, allowing multiple generations to overlap throughout the growing season.

The damage caused by Perkinsiella saccharicida is twofold. Direct feeding induces chlorosis and stunts plant growth. More critically, the insect is the primary vector of the Fiji disease virus, which causes severe stunting and leaf galls, often leading to total crop failure if management measures are not implemented promptly.

Integrated pest management (IPM) for this species includes:

• Deployment of sugarcane varieties resistant or tolerant to planthopper infestation.
• Augmentation of natural enemy populations, particularly egg parasitoids like Anagrus optabilis.
• Systematic field scouting to assess population density and the incidence of viral symptoms.
• Use of selective systemic insecticides during peak infestation periods to minimize impact on beneficial insects.
• Strict quarantine regulations regarding the movement of vegetative seed cane between regions.
