Description
The Fiji sugarcane leafhopper (Perkinsiella vitiensis) is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Delphacidae. It is recognized primarily for its role in causing severe yield losses in sugarcane cultivation through both direct feeding and the transmission of devastating plant pathogens.
The primary host plant for this species is sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum). It occasionally colonizes various wild grasses, which function as alternative hosts, maintaining pest populations during the off-season or in areas where sugarcane is harvested or fallow.
The biological cycle of the insect consists of the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Females insert their eggs directly into the leaf tissue or the midribs of the host plant, a behavior that effectively protects the eggs from predators and environmental stressors, while also complicating chemical control efforts.
