Deer mouse

The genus Peromyscus, commonly known as the deer mouse, belongs to the order Rodentia and the family Cricetidae. These rodents are significant pests in agricultural environments due to their widespread distribution, high reproductive rates, and their ability to thrive in diverse habitats ranging from open crop fields to storage facilities.

They cause substantial damage to a variety of agricultural crops, including cereals like corn, wheat, and barley, as well as legumes and vegetable seedlings. They are particularly destructive during planting seasons, as they dig up seeds from the soil, leading to significant yield losses due to reduced plant density and uneven germination.

The biology of the deer mouse is defined by high fecundity and rapid generation turnover. Females can produce multiple litters throughout the growing season, allowing populations to surge quickly. They construct nests in burrows, under field debris, or within storage structures, which provide protection from predators and adverse weather conditions.

Their destructive behavior includes feeding on germinating seeds, gnawing on the bark of young fruit trees during winter, and contaminating stored grain with their waste. Beyond direct physical damage, deer mice are notorious vectors for various diseases, posing severe health risks to both livestock and human workers handling the harvested crops.
