Description

Systematic position. Perpolita hammonis belongs to the phylum Mollusca, class Gastropoda, and family Euconulidae. It is a small land snail commonly found in moist habitats, which can occasionally transition from a soil-dwelling organism to a notable pest in agricultural and horticultural settings.

Affected crops. This pest primarily targets young vegetables and succulent ornamental plants. Susceptible crops include lettuce, various brassicas, strawberries, and young bean sprouts. It thrives particularly well in nursery environments where plants are kept in close proximity and the ground remains consistently damp.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Perpolita hammonis is highly dependent on environmental moisture. These snails are nocturnal and secretive, spending their daylight hours hidden under mulch, garden debris, or soil clumps. They lay eggs in moist soil, and their populations can increase rapidly during rainy seasons, especially in areas with high vegetation density.

Damage and economic impact. These snails feed by scraping tissue from leaves, which results in irregular holes and skeletal-looking foliage. The most significant damage occurs during the early growth stages of plants, which can cause stunted development or total crop loss. Furthermore, the mucus trails left on fruits and vegetables lower their market value and promote the growth of fungi.

Control measures. Effective management includes cultural practices such as removing leaf litter, weeding, and improving soil drainage to decrease habitat suitability. Barriers like gravel or coarse sand can prevent snails from reaching target crops. When manual control and habitat modification are insufficient, applying molluscicides based on iron phosphate is recommended as an environmentally sound control method.
