Vitrina (Latin: Vitrina) is a genus of land pulmonate gastropod mollusks belonging to the Vitrinidae family, commonly known as glass snails. In an agronomic context, these organisms are considered pests that, while less notorious than large field slugs, can cause significant damage to young plants in high-humidity environments.

This pest primarily attacks vegetable crops, berry bushes, and ornamental plants. Seedlings of lettuce, cabbage, various greens, and delicate flower petals are at the highest risk. The mollusk prefers moist, shaded areas of the garden where the soil retains moisture for extended periods, providing an ideal habitat.

The biology of Vitrina is closely linked to the availability of organic matter and high humidity. Their life cycle includes laying eggs in the topsoil or under decaying leaves. They are primarily nocturnal or active during overcast weather, as they tend to avoid direct sunlight, which causes rapid dehydration of their soft bodies.

The damage is characterized by jagged holes or irregular bite marks on leaf surfaces. Unlike insects, Vitrina leave a distinct, shiny mucus trail on the foliage. Under conditions of mass proliferation, they can completely destroy seedlings, leading to a significant reduction in plant stand density and overall crop yield quality.

Protection measures require a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Keeping the field free of weeds and plant debris is essential to eliminate hiding spots. Recommended control practices include:

  • Establishing mechanical barriers using gravel or pine needles.
  • Frequent soil cultivation to disrupt snail paths and destroy egg clutches.
  • Applying molluscicides based on metaldehyde or iron phosphate.
  • Utilizing traps baited with beer or fermented plant infusions to monitor and reduce populations.
