Description

Petrobia harti, commonly known as the Oxalis spider mite, is a plant-feeding mite belonging to the family Tetranychidae. Unlike some generalist spider mites, this species shows a strong preference for plants within the Oxalidaceae family, though it can occasionally be found on other ornamental and greenhouse crops.

Taxonomically, it falls under the order Trombidiformes. The biological cycle of this mite is significantly influenced by temperature; in greenhouse environments, it can complete multiple generations throughout the year. Development proceeds through egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages, with females often laying eggs directly onto the surface of the leaves.

The damage caused by Petrobia harti is primarily localized on the leaves. By piercing the epidermal cells and consuming the contents, the mites induce characteristic chlorotic stippling. As the feeding intensity increases, these spots coalesce, leading to severe leaf discolouration, tissue necrosis, and eventual leaf drop, which weakens the host plant considerably.

The economic impact of this pest is most notable in ornamental horticulture, where leaf quality is paramount. A heavy infestation can stunt plant growth, reduce flowering, and render the plants unsellable. Furthermore, because these mites are small and often lack the dense webbing associated with other spider mites, infestations can remain unnoticed until substantial damage has occurred.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for controlling Petrobia harti:

  • Regular scouting for signs of chlorosis or presence of the mites using a hand lens.
  • Proper sanitation practices, including the removal of infested plant debris and host weeds.
  • Environmental modification, such as increasing humidity levels, which is generally unfavourable for mite reproduction.
