Brush-tailed rock-wallaby

The brush-tailed rock-wallaby (Petrogale penicillata) is a marsupial belonging to the order Diprotodontia and the family Macropodidae. While primarily known for its distinct appearance and habitat preferences in rocky outcrops, this species can become a significant agricultural pest when its natural food sources are depleted or when crops are planted in close proximity to their rocky dwellings.

These animals are opportunistic herbivores that primarily damage cereal crops, legumes, and vegetable plantations. They are particularly attracted to young, tender vegetation during early growth stages. The nutritional value of cultivated crops often draws them away from native grasses, leading to concentrated feeding in agricultural areas.

The biology of Petrogale penicillata is characterized by high reproductive rates and nocturnal behavior, which makes management difficult. They are well-adapted to rocky terrains, using them as refuges during the day. Their agility allows them to bypass traditional low fences, making them highly effective at infiltrating protected farmlands under the cover of darkness.

Damage caused by rock-wallabies is manifest in the form of heavy grazing, resulting in significant yield loss. In addition to direct consumption, they cause mechanical damage to plant stems and increase soil compaction, which hinders root development and nutrient uptake in the affected field sections.

Protection strategies for farmers focus on exclusion and behavioral modification. Since the species is protected in many jurisdictions, lethal control is rarely an option. Instead, exclusion fencing that extends underground and incorporates angled top sections is used to prevent entry. Additionally, visual and auditory deterrents are employed to keep the population away from high-value crops.
