Description
Systematic position: The Mallow moth (Pexicopia malvella) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gelechiidae. It is a highly specialized insect pest that co-evolved with plants of the Malvaceae family, restricting its host range to specific genera.
Affected crops: The pest primarily impacts medicinal crops like marshmallow (Althaea officinalis), as well as ornamental varieties like hollyhocks (Alcea rosea) and common mallows. Its presence is most critical in seed production areas where reproductive tissue is the main target.
Biology and life cycle: The insect overwinters as a mature larva inside a soil cocoon. Pupation takes place during the spring. Adult moths emerge in early summer, typically in June and July. Females deposit eggs directly onto floral buds, and the hatching larvae immediately bore into the developing seed heads to feed.
Damage patterns and economic impact: Larvae destroy the internal structures of flower buds and developing fruit. This feeding behavior prevents seed maturation and often causes premature fruit drop. In cases of high infestation, the Mallow moth can cause yield losses exceeding 50-70% in sensitive medicinal plantations.
Control measures:
- Deep autumn plowing to disrupt the soil-dwelling pupae and reduce overwintering survival.
- Removal of wild host plants from field margins to prevent pest migration.
