Pezothrips

Pezothrips is a genus of insects belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. These tiny pests are known for their cryptic behavior, which often makes early detection in fields or greenhouses quite challenging for agronomists and farmers.

This pest primarily infests legume and solanaceous crops. Significant economic losses are often observed in pea and bean fields, as well as in various ornamental plant species. Pezothrips thrives by colonizing plant tissues, where both adults and larvae feed on sap and utilize the host for oviposition.

The life cycle of Pezothrips encompasses the egg, larva, prepupa, pupa, and adult stages. They typically overwinter as adults or larvae within the soil or in accumulated plant debris. Under favorable thermal conditions during the growing season, the insect can complete multiple generations, leading to rapid population explosions.

Feeding damage is characterized by discolored, mottled, or silver-like patches on leaves, buds, and young pods. As they pierce plant cells to extract sap, the resulting mechanical and physiological damage leads to stunted growth, reduced photosynthetic efficiency, and significant yield losses, along with a decrease in the quality of the harvest.
