Description

Systematic position. The buckwheat leaf beetle (Phaedon pertinax) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This beetle is a specialized herbivore that occupies a specific ecological niche, often impacting crops grown in temperate agricultural regions.

Target crops. The primary host plant for this species is buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum). In addition to agricultural fields, the beetle relies on wild plants within the Polygonaceae family to complete its life cycle and maintain populations in landscapes where buckwheat is not grown consistently.

Biology and life cycle. This pest undergoes a complete metamorphosis. Adult beetles typically overwinter in the soil or beneath crop residues. With the onset of warmer spring weather, they emerge to feed on host plants and mate. Females lay eggs on the leaves, and the larvae emerge to feed voraciously before descending into the soil to pupate.

Type of damage and economic impact. Both adult beetles and larvae are responsible for significant damage. Adults typically cause defoliation by eating irregular holes in the leaves.
