Ghost moth Phassus

The genus Phassus belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Hepialidae, commonly known as ghost moths. These insects are characterized as large nocturnal moths whose larvae are notorious borers, capable of inflicting severe damage to a variety of trees and perennial plants.

This pest infests a broad range of host plants, including various forest tree species and fruit crops. The larvae of Phassus are known for their wood-boring behavior; they penetrate deep into the stems and roots, creating tunnels that provide them with protection from predators and environmental factors.

The life cycle of this pest is relatively long and complex. Females scatter eggs while in flight, allowing them to disperse over large areas. Upon hatching, the larvae initially feed on soil organic matter or fine roots before transitioning to a sedentary lifestyle within the host plant, where they grow and feed on internal tissues for an extended period.

Damage caused by Phassus is primarily structural. By tunneling through the wood, larvae disrupt the plant's vascular system, hindering the transport of water and nutrients. This structural weakness often leads to dieback, increased susceptibility to secondary fungal infections, and the structural failure of stems or branches, eventually compromising the plant's health.

Integrated pest management strategies include:

• Using light traps to monitor adult moth populations and mitigate local reproduction.
• Mechanical removal of infested plant parts and sealing larval tunnels with systemic insecticide pastes.
• Promoting plant vigor through proper fertilization and watering to improve natural defenses.
• Timely application of contact or systemic insecticides during the peak activity of young larvae.

Effectively managing Phassus requires consistent field observation, as the hidden nature of the larvae makes chemical control difficult once they have burrowed deep into the host. Identifying early signs, such as frass deposits near the base of the stem, is critical for implementing effective control measures before the damage becomes irreversible.
