PHASSUS DAMOR

Phassus damor is a species of moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Hepialidae, commonly known as ghost moths or swifts. This insect is recognized as a significant pest in several tropical regions, primarily due to its wood-boring habits that compromise the structural integrity of various tree species.

The host range of this pest includes a variety of economically important trees, including species used in forestry and horticulture. Young plantations are particularly vulnerable, as the larvae can cause significant physiological stress, stunting growth and, in severe cases, leading to the total mortality of the affected young trees.

The life cycle involves a prolonged larval stage spent inside the wood. Unlike many other Lepidoptera species, the larvae of Phassus damor bore deep into the stems or trunks. This behavior provides them with protection from most environmental factors and predators. After completing development, the larvae pupate within the gallery they have constructed.

The damage caused by this pest is primarily internal. Visible symptoms include the accumulation of frass and wood shavings at the base of the tree or protruding from small holes in the bark. This tunneling activity disrupts the transport of water and nutrients, making the plant highly susceptible to secondary infections by pathogens and environmental stress factors like drought.
