Philanthus, commonly known as the bee-wolf, belongs to the family Crabronidae within the order Hymenoptera. While they are fascinating biological specimens, they are considered pests in agricultural contexts primarily due to their predatory behavior, which targets honey bees and significantly affects the pollination efficiency of various crops.

These wasps do not damage plant tissues directly, but their impact on agricultural productivity is substantial. By preying on honey bees, which are essential pollinators for orchards and vegetable gardens, Philanthus wasps disrupt the natural ecological balance required for optimal fruit set and crop yield.

The life cycle of the bee-wolf involves nesting in dry, sandy, and well-drained soils. A female wasp digs deep burrows where she provisions cells with paralyzed honey bees. A single egg is laid on the prey, and the emerging larva consumes the paralyzed bee over several days before spinning a cocoon. They typically overwinter in the soil as larvae or pupae, emerging as adults in the following warm season.
