The bee wolf, Philanthus triangulum, is a solitary wasp belonging to the family Crabronidae. While it does not feed directly on plant tissues, it is classified as a pest in an agricultural context due to its predatory behavior toward honey bees, which are essential pollinators for many commercial crops.

Adult wasps feed on nectar from flowers, but their reproductive cycle requires them to hunt. Female wasps capture honey bees in flight, paralyze them with a sting, and carry them to underground burrows. Each larva requires several bees to reach maturity, leading to a significant depletion of bee populations.

The life cycle involves digging deep nests in sandy or light-textured soils where the wasps thrive. The larvae emerge, feed on the provisioned bees, and eventually pupate in the soil. The emergence of new adults typically occurs in mid-summer, coinciding with the peak foraging activity of bees.

The damage caused by Philanthus triangulum is primarily observed in apiaries located near sandy soils. The loss of a large number of worker bees leads to reduced honey production and poor pollination efficiency for neighboring fields of sunflowers, oilseeds, and fruit trees.

Management strategies focus on disrupting the nesting environment. Tilling or irrigating sandy areas known for nesting activity is highly effective in destroying larvae. Additionally, beekeepers often employ traps or screens at the hive entrance to prevent wasps from entering or catching bees during their return flight.
