Description
The common striped woodlouse (Philoscia muscorum) is a terrestrial crustacean belonging to the order Isopoda and the family Philosciidae. Unlike typical agricultural insect pests, woodlice are crustaceans that rely on moist environments to breathe through specialized respiratory organs similar to gills.
These organisms primarily inhabit moist habitats, making them significant pests in greenhouses, nurseries, and damp soil conditions. They pose a threat to seedlings, young vegetable shoots, strawberries, and tender ornamental plants. They are attracted to damp organic matter but will actively consume living plant tissue when food sources are scarce.
The lifecycle of Philoscia muscorum is closely tied to moisture availability. Females carry eggs in a brood pouch, and the young undergo several molts before reaching maturity. Being nocturnal creatures, they hide during the day under pots, garden debris, or loose soil, emerging at night to feed.
The damage caused by these pests includes irregular holes in leaves, damaged stems, and stunted growth caused by feeding on delicate root systems. In high density, they can cause significant economic loss by wounding plants, which often makes the damaged tissues highly susceptible to fungal diseases and decay.
To effectively manage populations of these woodlice, a combination of cultural and chemical controls is recommended:
- Maintain proper greenhouse hygiene by removing organic debris and rotting wood.
- Improve ventilation and drainage to reduce excessive soil and air humidity.
