Willow leaf beetle

The willow leaf beetle (Phratora tibialis) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Chrysomelidae family. This insect is a significant pest of woody plants, particularly affecting Salix (willow) and Populus (poplar) species across its distribution range, causing aesthetic and physiological damage to forest stands and ornamental trees.

The primary host plants are various willow species. The beetle targets young leaves and shoots, which poses a substantial threat to tree nurseries and young plantations. The feeding behavior of the adults and larvae directly interrupts the photosynthetic process of the host plant, hindering overall growth and structural development.

The biology of Phratora tibialis consists of a complete metamorphosis. Adults typically overwinter in forest litter, beneath bark crevices, or in the soil near the base of the host tree. In spring, they emerge, feed on newly developing foliage, mate, and deposit clusters of eggs on the underside of leaves. Larvae develop through several instars before pupating in the soil or in rolled-up leaf debris.

The damage is primarily characterized by skeletonization. The larvae feed gregariously on the leaf tissue, leaving only the veins intact, while adult beetles create irregular perforations in the leaf blades. Significant outbreaks can lead to widespread defoliation, leaving trees vulnerable to drought, secondary pests, and fungal diseases.

Effective control measures involve integrated pest management strategies. Cultural practices, such as maintaining cleanliness around base areas of the trees, help reduce overwintering populations. When necessary, chemical control using contact or systemic insecticides is applied during the peak larval hatching period to minimize tree stress and prevent population explosions.
