Blue willow beetle

The Blue willow beetle (Phratora vulgatissima) is a significant coleopteran pest belonging to the Chrysomelidae family. This small, iridescent beetle is widely distributed and primarily targets willow species (Salix) and poplars (Populus). It represents a major challenge for commercial willow plantations and ornamental willow tree management, as both adults and larvae feed voraciously on foliage.

The life cycle of Phratora vulgatissima typically includes one or two generations per year, depending on the latitude and local climate. Adults overwinter in protected areas such as soil litter or bark crevices. Emerging in early spring, they feed on budding leaves. Eggs are deposited on the underside of leaves, and after hatching, the larvae undergo three distinct developmental instars, causing sustained damage throughout the growing season.

Damage is characterized by both adult and larval feeding. Adults create small, circular "shot-hole" punctures in the leaves, while the gregarious larvae skeletonize the leaf tissue, leaving only the vascular structure intact. Severe infestations lead to significant leaf loss, which reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, stunts shoot growth, and significantly impacts the production of biomass.

The economic impact of this pest is particularly severe in short-rotation coppice (SRC) willow plantations, where rapid biomass production is the primary goal. Repeated defoliation weakens the stools, reducing their lifespan and overall yield quality. Furthermore, the resulting physiological stress makes the trees more susceptible to environmental factors like pathogens and drought.

Effective management strategies include:

• Regular field scouting during spring to detect early signs of infestation.
• Encouraging natural predators, such as parasitoid wasps and carabid beetles.
• Selective application of biorational insecticides when larval thresholds are exceeded.
• Strategic timing of chemical treatments to target young, vulnerable larval stages.
• Maintaining healthy plantation vigor to improve natural defense mechanisms.
