Systematic position: The tomato pinworm (Phthorimaea ephithymella) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gelechiidae. It is a significant agricultural pest known for its specialized diet and ability to cause extensive damage to Solanaceous crops across various regions.

Host plants: This pest primarily targets members of the Solanaceae family. Key affected crops include tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants, and peppers. In addition to commercial crops, wild Solanaceous weeds serve as critical reservoirs, allowing the population of the moth to survive and spread throughout the growing season.

Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis, including egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The moths are nocturnal and deposit their eggs on the foliage or fruit of host plants.
