Citrus leaf miner

The Citrus leaf miner (Phyllocnistis citrella) is a small moth belonging to the family Gracillariidae. It is considered a significant global pest in citrus-growing regions, known for its ability to devastate young foliage and nursery stock.

The moth specifically targets various citrus species, including lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruit. The larvae feed exclusively on the soft, young leaves produced during flush cycles, leaving older, hardened leaves untouched, which restricts the pest's impact to active growth periods.

The life cycle begins with eggs laid on the underside of leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae penetrate the epidermis and create serpentine mines. The entire life cycle, from egg to adult, is temperature-dependent and can be completed in as little as two to three weeks under optimal conditions, allowing for multiple generations per year.

Damaged leaves display irregular, silver-colored winding trails. These injuries cause the leaf tissue to curl, twist, and eventually dry out. Beyond direct leaf loss, the mines create entry points for secondary infections, most notably citrus canker, which significantly impacts the health and yield of the tree.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical interventions. Pruning strategies to synchronize growth flushes can minimize the vulnerable periods. When chemical control is necessary, systemic insecticides are applied to ensure the toxin reaches the larvae protected beneath the leaf epidermis, while biological control agents like parasitic wasps can provide sustainable suppression.
