Description

Systematic position: The broad-necked leaf beetle (Phyllodecta laticollis) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. It is a specialized phytophagous insect that plays a significant role in the degradation of host plant tissues within the Salicaceae family.

Host plants: This pest primarily targets various species of willow (Salix) and poplar (Populus). It is frequently found in nurseries, shelterbelts, and urban landscape plantations, where it poses a threat to both young saplings and mature trees by reducing their health and aesthetic value.

Biology and life cycle: The adult beetles hibernate in leaf litter, under bark, or in soil crevices. During the spring, they emerge to feed on developing foliage. Females deposit eggs in clusters on the undersides of leaves. The larvae hatch and develop through several instars before descending to the soil to pupate, completing their life cycle within one or more generations depending on the climate.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: Adults create small, irregular holes in the leaf blades, while the larvae feed gregariously and skeletonize the leaves, often leaving only the veins intact. Heavy infestations lead to extensive defoliation, which causes physiological stress, reduced growth rates, and increased susceptibility to other biotic and abiotic stressors.

Cultivation practices, such as removing fallen leaves and loosening the soil around tree bases, can significantly disrupt the pest's overwintering sites.
