Description

The hazel leaf miner (Phyllonorycter coryli) is a small moth species belonging to the family Gracillariidae within the order Lepidoptera. It is a common pest that specifically targets deciduous trees and shrubs, particularly those in the Corylaceae family, posing a challenge for hazelnut cultivation.

Primary hosts for this pest include hazel (Corylus avellana), alder, and birch trees. While it is rarely lethal to mature trees, significant infestations in hazelnut orchards can lead to reduced plant vigor, foliage loss, and a decrease in nut yield due to the destruction of photosynthetic leaf tissue.

The life cycle of the moth typically consists of two generations per year. The insect overwinters as a pupa within fallen leaves on the ground. In spring, the adult moths emerge to mate and lay eggs on the undersides of leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the leaf tissue to begin feeding, creating characteristic mines.

The damage caused by the larvae is visually distinct: they create small, blotch-like mines on the underside of leaves, which eventually become wrinkled as the larvae feed on the parenchyma. Severe infestations can cause leaves to turn yellow or brown prematurely and fall from the tree, which negatively impacts the overall health of the orchard.

Effective management strategies combine sanitation and chemical control. It is essential to remove or bury fallen leaves in autumn to eliminate the overwintering sites of the pupae. During the growing season, if monitoring detects high moth activity, the application of selective insecticides targeting young larvae is recommended to break the life cycle and protect foliage.
