Description

Systematic position. The linden leaf miner (Phyllonorycter issikii) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gracillariidae. This species is a significant invasive pest that has become widespread in many regions, specifically targeting trees of the genus Tilia.

Host plants. The primary hosts for this moth are various species of linden (lime trees). It predominantly affects trees in urban landscapes, parks, and botanical gardens, where high concentrations of host plants facilitate the rapid spread of the pest population throughout the growing season.

Biology and lifecycle. The life cycle involves two to three generations per year, depending on climatic conditions. The pupal stage overwinters inside the fallen leaves on the ground. Adult moths emerge in spring, mating and depositing eggs on the undersides of the leaves. Larvae tunnel into the leaf tissue, creating mines as they feed and progress through their development stages.

Damage and pest status. Larvae feed on the leaf parenchyma, resulting in the formation of blotch mines on the leaf surface. Severely infested leaves turn yellow and drop prematurely. Heavy infestations cause significant stress to the trees, leading to reduced photosynthesis, lower aesthetic value, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections or environmental stress.

Control measures. Integrated pest management strategies are essential for effective control:

  • Sanitation practices, such as raking and destroying fallen leaves in autumn, significantly reduce the overwintering population.
  • Application of systemic insecticides at the start of the egg-laying or larval emergence phase.
  • Monitoring adult moth activity using pheromone traps to time the applications precisely.
  • Promoting overall tree health through proper irrigation and fertilization to mitigate the impact of defoliation.
