Description
The beech leaf miner (Phyllonorycter maestingella) is a moth belonging to the family Gracillariidae, order Lepidoptera. It is a specialized pest that targets beech trees, and in some regions, it can significantly impact the health of both ornamental and forest beech stands.
The primary host for this insect is the European beech (Fagus sylvatica). The moth larvae feed exclusively within the leaf tissues. While individual damage might seem negligible, heavy infestations can lead to significant canopy thinning and stress on the host trees, especially during drought years.
Regarding its biology, the species typically undergoes two generations per year. They overwinter as pupae hidden inside the fallen, mined leaves on the forest floor. As temperatures rise in spring, adults emerge to mate and lay eggs, starting a new cycle that lasts throughout the growing season.
The damage is characterized by distinct, flat mines located on the underside of the leaves, which eventually appear as pale or brownish patches. As the larvae consume the leaf interior, the foliage often curls or dries up prematurely. This feeding activity reduces the tree's photosynthetic capacity, negatively impacting overall growth.
