The plane leaf miner Phyllonorycter platani is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gracillariidae. It is a specialist pest that has become widespread in regions where plane trees (Platanus) are cultivated, causing significant ecological and aesthetic impact.
The primary hosts of this insect are species within the genus Platanus. The larvae feed on the leaf tissue, creating mines that create visible blotches on the foliage. While these trees are resilient, repeated annual infestations can cause stress that makes the trees susceptible to secondary diseases.
Regarding its biology, the moth completes multiple generations within a single year depending on the climatic conditions. The larvae develop entirely within the leaf blade. As they feed, they create narrow galleries that eventually expand into characteristic white or brown blotch mines.
