The oak leaf miner (Phyllonorycter quercifoliella) is a moth species belonging to the family Gracillariidae. This tiny insect is widely distributed across Europe and is recognized as a significant pest affecting various oak species, often causing aesthetic and physiological damage to forest and urban tree populations.
The host range is primarily limited to trees of the genus Quercus, with the common oak being a frequent target. The larvae are leaf miners, meaning they spend their entire development period inside the leaf tissue, which makes them highly dependent on the host tree's phenological cycle for survival and successful pupation.
The life cycle typically spans two to three generations per year, depending on the local climate. Overwintering occurs mainly as pupae or adults within the leaf litter beneath the host trees. In the spring, adult moths emerge, mate, and deposit eggs on the underside of young leaves, initiating the cycle of infestation for the new season.

As the larvae feed on the leaf parenchyma, they create distinct, often rectangular or oval blotch mines that cause the epidermis to wrinkle and turn brown. Sanitation is critical; removing and destroying infested leaf litter during autumn significantly reduces the overwintering population. In ornamental or high-value landscapes, systemic insecticide applications may be necessary, and monitoring adult activity with pheromone traps is recommended to ensure precise timing of any control actions.
