Bronzed flea beetle

Phyllotreta aerea

Description

The bronzed flea beetle (Phyllotreta aerea) is a small coleopteran insect belonging to the leaf beetle family (Chrysomelidae). It is a well-known agricultural pest that specializes in feeding on various plant species within the Brassicaceae family, often causing severe damage to commercial vegetable and oilseed crop production globally.

This pest affects a wide range of host plants, primarily including various cabbage types, radishes, turnips, rapeseed, mustard, and horseradish. Seedlings and young plants are particularly vulnerable, as even minor damage during the early growth stages can significantly stunt plant development and reduce final yield quality and quantity.

The life cycle begins with adult beetles overwintering in soil or debris. In spring, they emerge with increasing temperatures and move to host plants to feed and mate. Females lay eggs near the base of plants, and the resulting larvae feed on fine roots underground. This subterranean feeding, combined with the leaf damage caused by adults, stresses the plant significantly.

Adult beetles damage plants by creating small, characteristic circular holes in leaves, often referred to as shot-hole damage. In heavy infestations, the leaf surface can become almost entirely skeletonized. This leads to reduced photosynthetic capacity, increased water loss via transpiration, and a high susceptibility to secondary pathogens like fungal rots or bacterial infections.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Cultural practices such as early planting, crop rotation, and the elimination of volunteer cruciferous weeds are highly recommended to disrupt the beetle's life cycle. When thresholds are exceeded, chemical control using registered insecticides (such as pyrethroids) remains a common necessity for protecting crop stands.

  • Early planting to allow plants to outgrow vulnerable stages.
  • Rigorous weed management in and around fields.
  • Use of row covers for small-scale vegetable production.
  • Seed treatment with systemic insecticides.
