Description
Phyllotreta chotanica is a serious agricultural pest belonging to the leaf beetle family (Chrysomelidae) within the order Coleoptera. This species is part of the complex of flea beetles known for their specialized feeding habits on plants within the Brassicaceae family.
The host range of this pest is extensive, including major crops such as canola (rapeseed), various cabbage varieties, radishes, turnips, and mustard. Because these beetles primarily target young seedlings, the economic damage can be catastrophic, often necessitating the reseeding of large agricultural fields due to stand loss.
The biology of the beetle is highly dependent on temperature, with adults overwintering in soil debris or protected sheltered areas. In early spring, when temperatures rise, they emerge and immediately begin feeding on available host plants. Females lay eggs in the soil, and the resulting larvae feed on root hairs, further stressing the plant and impeding its nutrient uptake.
The characteristic damage caused by adults is known as shot-holing, where the insects eat small, round holes through the leaf surface. As the density of the pest increases, these holes coalesce, leading to skeletonized leaves and the eventual wilting or death of the seedling. This feeding pattern is particularly damaging during the tender cotyledon stage.
To effectively manage the crucifer flea beetle, a comprehensive approach is required:
- implementing early planting schedules to get plants established;
- utilizing row covers or netting for small-scale production;
- managing weeds in and around fields to remove alternative hosts;
- applying seed treatments with systemic insecticides for early protection;
- monitoring fields frequently and applying foliar insecticides if economic thresholds are reached.
