Description

The cabbage stem flea beetle (Phyllotreta chrysocephala) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Chrysomelidae family. This small, metallic-colored beetle is recognized globally as a significant agricultural pest that poses a particular threat to commercial brassica crop production, especially during the seedling and rosette stages.

The primary host plants for this pest include members of the Brassicaceae family. Oilseed rape (canola), mustard, turnips, and various types of cabbage are frequently heavily infested. The insect is highly specialized, and its presence can drastically reduce plant vigor and crop uniformity across affected fields.

The biological life cycle of this beetle usually consists of a single generation per year. Adults overwinter in soil or sheltered plant debris and emerge in early spring as temperatures rise. Following a period of feeding on foliage, females deposit eggs in the soil near the plant base. Larval development occurs inside the petioles and stems, where the larvae feed on the internal tissues, causing systemic physiological stress to the host plant.

The damage caused by the cabbage stem flea beetle is twofold. Adults cause foliage injury by eating small holes in the cotyledons and leaves, which can result in stand failure in severe cases. Larvae, however, are often more insidious as they bore into the plant structure, causing stunted growth, leaf wilt, and a significant reduction in the plant's ability to survive harsh winter conditions or recover from other environmental stresses.
