Turnip flea beetle

The turnip flea beetle (Phyllotreta nigripes) is a member of the leaf beetle family (Chrysomelidae) and is recognized as a significant agricultural pest. These small, agile beetles are easily identified by their metallic sheen and their ability to jump when disturbed, which is a key survival strategy in their natural habitat.

This pest primarily attacks plants within the Brassicaceae family. Its host range is quite broad and includes economically important crops such as oilseed rape, cabbage, broccoli, radish, and mustard. Seedlings are the most vulnerable stage; they can be completely defoliated by adult beetles in a very short period of time under favorable weather conditions.

The life cycle of Phyllotreta nigripes begins after overwintering, typically in the soil or under leaf litter. As spring temperatures rise, the beetles emerge and begin feeding voraciously. Females deposit eggs in the soil near the host plants, and the emerging larvae feed on the roots, which can cause significant stress to the young plant's development.

The damage caused by adults is characterized by small, round holes in the leaves, often referred to as a "shot-hole" pattern. When these holes become numerous, they coalesce, leading to severe leaf tissue destruction, wilting, and eventually the death of the seedling. Larval feeding on root hairs impairs nutrient uptake, further weakening the plant's structural integrity.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as maintaining healthy soil conditions, promoting rapid seedling growth, and controlling wild brassicaceous weeds are essential. Additionally, the use of insecticidal seed treatments is highly recommended for early-season protection, followed by foliar insecticide applications if the economic threshold is exceeded.
