Description
Taxonomic position. The striped flea beetle (Phyllotreta vittula) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Chrysomelidae family. It is a significant agricultural pest that causes substantial economic losses, particularly in regions where early spring cereal crops are extensively grown.
Host crops. This pest primarily targets small grains, including spring wheat, barley, oats, corn, and millet. It can also survive on various wild grasses, which serves as a reservoir for populations in the proximity of agricultural fields, making long-term control challenging.
Biology and life cycle. The adult beetles overwinter in the upper soil layers, leaf litter, or debris in field margins. They emerge in early spring as temperatures rise, immediately migrating to young seedlings to feed. Females deposit eggs in the soil near the roots of host plants. The larvae develop underground, feeding on the root systems before pupating.
Damage and pest status. Adult beetles feed on leaves, leaving distinctive longitudinal stripes or small holes, which cause the tissue to dry out and the plant to wilt. Severe infestations often result in the total destruction of seedlings. Larval feeding on roots compromises plant vigor, significantly reducing biomass accumulation and final grain yield.
Protection measures. Integrated pest management strategies are essential for controlling the striped flea beetle.
