Description
Phymatocera is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Tenthredinidae (common sawflies). The most prominent species is Phymatocera aterrima, which is widely recognized as a specialized pest that targets specific ornamental plant species in temperate climates.
The primary host plants for this pest are members of the Asparagaceae family, particularly the genus Polygonatum (Solomon's seal). These plants are especially vulnerable when grown in shaded and moist environments, which provide optimal conditions for both the plant growth and the insect's life cycle.
The life cycle of Phymatocera consists of complete metamorphosis. Adult sawflies emerge in the spring to lay eggs directly into the leaf tissue of the host plant. The resulting larvae, often called false caterpillars, feed voraciously on the foliage, undergoing several instars before descending into the soil to pupate and overwinter.
