Phytodietus coryphaeus is a species of parasitic wasp belonging to the family Ichneumonidae. It is an important part of the natural complex of entomophages that regulate the population density of various caterpillars in agroecosystems. Unlike phytophagous pests, this insect primarily interacts with host larvae to complete its developmental cycle.

The host range of Phytodietus coryphaeus mainly consists of leafroller larvae (Tortricidae), which are notorious pests of orchard trees such as apple, pear, and plum. By targeting these hidden larvae, the wasp provides a significant service in reducing the damage caused to fruit crops without the need for additional chemical intervention.

The life cycle of this species is highly specialized. The adult female locates a suitable host and deposits an egg on or inside the caterpillar. The developing larva is an ectoparasitoid, feeding on the host's body fluids and tissues throughout its larval stages. This process effectively halts the growth of the caterpillar and prevents it from reaching maturity and causing further harm to the plant.

Although sometimes mistakenly categorized alongside crop-damaging insects in broad databases, Phytodietus coryphaeus should be managed as a beneficial insect. The "damage" it supposedly causes is non-existent in terms of plant health. Instead, its presence is a sign of a healthy, functioning ecosystem capable of managing pest outbreaks naturally.

To protect and encourage Phytodietus coryphaeus in orchards, agronomists recommend adopting Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices. Key strategies include avoiding broad-spectrum insecticide applications, maintaining floral diversity in the field edges to provide nectar for adult wasps, and monitoring pest populations to ensure chemical use is only a last resort, thereby preserving this natural ally.
