Laurel bud mite

The laurel bud mite (Phytoptus lauricola) is a microscopic pest belonging to the family Eriophyidae. These mites are specialized feeders known to infest the foliage and buds of the Laurel family, particularly the bay laurel (*Laurus nobilis*). Due to their minute size and worm-like bodies, they are often overlooked until significant damage becomes visible on the plant.

Taxonomically, the mite is classified within the order Trombidiformes. Unlike many other arachnids, these mites possess only two pairs of legs, which are situated near the head. Their life cycle is relatively rapid, allowing them to produce several generations in a single growing season. During winter, the mites typically seek shelter in dormant buds or crevices in the bark to survive the colder temperatures.

The primary hosts for Phytoptus lauricola are bay laurel plants. The mites feed by piercing the plant cells and extracting the fluid, which triggers a hormonal response in the host tissue. This feeding behavior is most damaging when the plants are producing new growth, as the young, tender leaves are highly susceptible to the mite's piercing-sucking mouthparts.

The visible symptoms of an infestation include the formation of irregular galls, leaf curling, and yellowing (chlorosis) of the foliage. In severe cases, the leaf structure becomes stunted and distorted, leading to premature leaf drop. The aesthetic damage is often the primary concern for gardeners, although heavy infestations can also weaken the overall physiological health of the plant.

Management of the laurel bud mite requires a combination of cultural and chemical controls:

• Regular pruning and removal of symptomatic branches to limit the spread.
• Application of suitable acaricides during the early stages of the growing season.
• Use of horticultural oils or sulfur-based sprays to reduce mite populations.
• Maintaining optimal plant health to ensure the laurel can better withstand pest pressure.
