Description
The linden gall mite (Phytoptus nalepi) is a microscopic pest classified within the family Eriophyidae. As a specialized phytophage, it exclusively targets linden trees (Tilia species), causing distinct morphological changes in the leaves known as galls.
The host range is specific to Tilia species. The mite primarily attacks young foliage, initiating the growth of felt-like patches on the upper surface of the leaves. These galls are areas of abnormal cell growth caused by the mite's feeding behavior.
The biological cycle begins in the spring when overwintered females emerge from under bud scales. They immediately move to developing leaves to feed and lay eggs. Throughout the summer, multiple generations can develop, leading to an expansion of the infested areas on the tree canopy.
Damage to the plant is both aesthetic and physiological. While usually not fatal to a mature tree, severe infestations lead to leaf curling, premature yellowing, and reduction in the tree's overall photosynthetic capacity, which can hinder growth rates in saplings.
Control strategies for managing mite populations include:
- Regular pruning and removal of infested leaf litter during autumn.
- Application of specialized miticides (acaricides) in early spring as buds begin to burst.
- Encouraging tree health through proper fertilization and irrigation.
- Monitoring trees frequently during the early season to detect the first signs of gall formation.
