Description

The hazelnut bud mite (Phytoptus quadrisetus) is a significant pest belonging to the family Eriophyidae within the order Acariformes. This microscopic mite specializes in attacking hazelnut (Corylus) trees, often remaining undetected until severe damage to the buds becomes visible in the orchard.

The host range is restricted to hazelnut species, including commercial filbert cultivars. The mites reside within the buds, feeding on the developing tissues. Their presence inhibits normal bud development and prevents the formation of catkins and female flowers, which are essential for nut production.

The life cycle is closely synchronized with the phenology of the host plant. The mites overwinter as adults and nymphs inside the buds. As temperatures rise in spring, the mites migrate from infested buds to new, developing vegetative and reproductive buds on the current season's growth.

Damage is characterized by the formation of enlarged, deformed, and globose buds, often referred to as "big bud" symptoms. These infested buds typically fail to open or produce stunted, abnormal foliage. Heavy infestations can significantly reduce the vigor of the tree and lead to substantial yield losses.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach.

  • Sanitation: Manually removing and destroying infested buds or shoots during the dormant season is the most reliable method for small areas.
  • Chemical control: Applying acaricides during the mite migration period in early spring is critical for reducing population density.
  • Monitoring: Regular scouting during the dormant period is essential to determine the severity of infestation and timing for intervention.
