Caper white
Pieris teutonia
Description
The Caper white (Pieris teutonia) is an insect belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Pieridae. Recognized as a significant agricultural pest, it is primarily found in Australia and Oceania, where its migratory swarms can cause substantial damage to commercial crops and vegetable gardens.
This pest mainly targets plants within the Brassicaceae family. Its host range includes various economically important crops such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, radish, and canola. The larvae are voracious feeders and can cause severe defoliation, leading to significant yield losses in affected agricultural fields.
The life cycle of the Caper white progresses through four distinct stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and imago (adult butterfly). Females deposit eggs in clusters on the underside of host plant leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae undergo several instars while consuming plant foliage. Once maturity is reached, they pupate on stems or nearby structures before emerging as adults.
The damage caused by the larvae is characterized by leaf skeletonization. Younger larvae typically consume the leaf tissue while leaving the vascular veins intact. As the larvae develop, their feeding activity intensifies, often resulting in complete defoliation. This process drastically reduces the photosynthetic surface area, weakening the plant and damaging the quality of the marketable harvest.
Control measures rely on an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Routine monitoring of fields is essential for early detection of egg clusters. Biological insecticides containing Bacillus thuringiensis are highly effective against early-instar larvae with minimal environmental impact. For high-infestation levels, chemical insecticides should be applied in accordance with regional regulations and specific crop instructions.
- Frequent scouting of leaf undersides.
- Removal of wild cruciferous weeds.
- Encouraging natural predators and parasitoids.
- Targeted insecticide applications based on threshold levels.
