Description

Systematic position. The apple pimpla (Pimpla pomorum) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Ichneumonidae. It is a specialized parasitoid wasp known to interact with various orchard-dwelling insect larvae, particularly those affecting apple trees.

Crops and damage. This species primarily infests fruit trees such as apples, pears, and occasionally quince. While often categorized as a beneficial entomophage because it parasitizes the apple blossom weevil, its presence within the flower buds can sometimes disrupt the reproductive development of the host plant, leading to direct economic consequences.

Biology and life cycle. The female wasp deposits eggs into the buds of apple trees. The larva develops inside the bud, feeding upon the larvae of the apple blossom weevil. The entire transformation from egg to adult occurs within the infested bud, which eventually withers and remains on the branch, serving as a protective chamber for the pupal stage.

Character of damage. Infested buds turn brown, dry out, and fail to open. This effectively removes potential flowers from the blooming cycle. While the wasp destroys the primary pest, the destruction of the flower bud itself constitutes a loss of the potential fruit crop, making the impact of this insect a double-edged sword for fruit growers.

Control measures. Management of Pimpla pomorum requires a balanced approach to avoid harming beneficial populations while protecting yields. Recommended practices include:
