European pine vole

The European pine vole (lat. Pitymys) is a small rodent belonging to the family Cricetidae. These voles are known for their semi-fossorial lifestyle, spending a significant portion of their time in subterranean tunnels, which makes them highly elusive and difficult to monitor in agricultural fields and orchards.

Taxonomically, they are part of the Rodentia order. The Pitymys genus is characterized by specialized adaptations for digging, which allows these voles to undermine root systems with precision. They are particularly active in soils with a high humus content or under dense ground cover that provides thermal insulation and protection.

Their feeding habits cause severe damage to a wide range of plants. They primarily target the roots of fruit trees, young shrubs, and various vegetable crops. In orchards, pine voles often strip the bark from the roots and base of the trunk, which disrupts nutrient transport and frequently results in the death of the tree.

The reproductive strategy of these voles is extremely efficient. They reach sexual maturity at a young age, and females can produce several litters per year. Because they are active throughout the year, even in winter, their population numbers can grow rapidly if environmental conditions allow and natural predators are absent.
