Pine vole

The pine vole (Pitymys pinetorum), belonging to the family Cricetidae, is a highly destructive rodent known for its fossorial habits. Unlike other vole species, it spends the vast majority of its life underground, making it a particularly challenging pest for orchardists and nursery managers to control.

This vole primarily targets the root systems and the bark of trees near the soil line. Common victims include apple, pear, and various stone fruit trees. By feeding on the cambium layer of roots and lower trunks, these rodents can cause severe structural damage, often leading to the girdling and death of young, healthy saplings.

The biological cycle of the pine vole is characterized by high reproductive capacity. Females can produce multiple litters per year, which, combined with the safety provided by their subterranean tunnel systems, allows populations to explode in stable environments. They prefer areas with heavy mulch or ground cover, which provide both food and protection from predators.

Damage symptoms are often subtle in the early stages, as the destruction occurs below ground. Typical signs include the sudden yellowing of leaves, wilting during dry periods, and unstable trees that can be easily pulled from the soil due to extensive root destruction. By the time visual signs appear on the tree canopy, the root damage is often irreversible.
