European pine vole

Systematic position: The European pine vole (Pitymys subterraneus, also known as Microtus subterraneus) belongs to the order Rodentia and the family Cricetidae. It is a small rodent characterized by its subterranean lifestyle, which makes it a challenging pest to detect and manage in conventional agricultural systems.

Affected crops: This vole species causes significant damage to various crops, including root vegetables, tubers, and young fruit trees. Nurseries and orchards are particularly vulnerable, as the vole targets the root systems and the bark of young saplings, often leading to the sudden death of the plants.

Biology and lifecycle: The species exhibits a strictly subterranean behavior, rarely venturing onto the surface. They reproduce throughout the warmer months, with females producing several litters per year. Their high reproductive rate and protected habitat underground allow them to maintain high population densities in agricultural fields, meadows, and gardens.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: The primary harm is caused by feeding on roots, tubers, and the cambium layer of tree bark. Because the damage occurs below the soil surface, farmers often notice the infestation only when plants begin to wilt or topple over. Extensive tunneling can also disturb soil structure and compromise the stability of crop root systems.

Control measures: Management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to be effective.

• Deep tillage and soil cultivation to destroy subterranean tunnel systems.
• Maintaining clean fields by removing weeds that provide cover and extra food.
• Application of rodenticides via bait stations to target the pests while ensuring safety for other species.
• Installing mechanical traps or barriers for localized protection of sensitive seedlings.
• Promoting habitats for natural predators such as birds of prey to help regulate populations.
