Placonotus proximus

Placonotus proximus is a dangerous pest species belonging to the family Cucujidae, order Coleoptera. This insect is primarily known as a resident of grain storage facilities, where it specializes in infesting stored grain and various processed food products.

The main food sources for this pest include cereal crops such as wheat, corn, and rice, as well as oilseeds. It is frequently encountered in flour, cereals, and dried food commodities, particularly in environments characterized by high humidity and inadequate ventilation systems.

The life cycle of this pest is strictly dependent on the microclimate within the facility. Optimal conditions for rapid population growth include temperatures above 20-25 degrees Celsius and high moisture content in the grain bulk. Under favorable conditions, the species can complete several generations per year.

The damage caused by this insect involves both adults and larvae feeding on the embryo and endosperm of the grain kernels. Its harmfulness is manifested not only in direct weight loss of the stored commodities but also in a significant reduction of seed viability and technological quality of the grain. Furthermore, metabolic waste products promote mold growth and grain heating.
