Description
Systematic position: The willow leaf beetle (Plagiodera cerea, often classified within the Plagiodera versicolora species complex) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. It is a specialized pest that primarily targets trees and shrubs within the Salicaceae family.
Host plants: The primary hosts are species of willow (Salix) and poplar (Populus). These insects are commonly found in commercial timber plantations, ornamental gardens, and riparian zones, where they can reach high population densities during favorable weather conditions.
Biology and life cycle: Adults overwinter in protected areas, such as bark crevices, leaf litter, or debris at the base of the host tree. In spring, they emerge to feed on young foliage. Eggs are laid in clusters on the underside of leaves. Larvae develop through three stages and are typically gregarious, feeding side-by-side on the same leaf surface until they pupate.
