Willow leaf beetle

Systematic position: Plagiodera inclusa belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This beetle is a specialized pest that targets species of the genus Salix (willow) and sometimes Populus (poplar). It is recognized as a significant pest in nurseries, parks, and riparian plantations where willow species are prevalent.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is tightly synchronized with the host plant's phenology. Adults overwinter in leaf litter or under bark crevices. As trees begin to leaf out in spring, the beetles emerge to feed and mate. Females deposit egg clusters on the underside of leaves. After hatching, larvae feed greedily through several instars before pupating openly on the leaf surface.

Damage patterns: The damage caused by Plagiodera inclusa is characterized by both adult and larval feeding. Adults create irregular holes and notches in the leaf lamina. Larvae, during their early stages, perform skeletonization, leaving the leaf veins intact. Later, as they mature, they consume the entire leaf tissue, leading to severe defoliation of the infested trees.

Economic importance: Large-scale infestations lead to significant physiological stress for the host plants. This results in reduced growth rates, impaired photosynthesis, and diminished aesthetic value in landscape plantings. In young nursery stock, repeated defoliation can compromise the overall development of the plants, making them more susceptible to drought and pathogenic fungi.

Protection measures: Management of this pest requires an integrated approach. Cultural controls include the removal and destruction of fallen leaves in autumn to reduce the overwintering population. When chemical intervention is necessary, systemic or contact insecticides are applied during the period of maximum larval activity, ensuring that treatments are timed to minimize impact on beneficial insects.
