Planchonia stentae

Planchonia stentae is a specialized scale insect species belonging to the family Asterolecaniidae within the order Hemiptera. These insects are known as pit-making scales, often inducing gall-like structures on host plants, which provides them with protection and a steady source of nutrients while causing significant damage to the plant tissue.

The pest primarily targets various woody plants, trees, and shrubs. In agricultural and horticultural settings, Planchonia stentae can become a major concern, as its feeding habits disrupt the flow of sap, causing systemic stress to the plant and making it susceptible to secondary pathogen attacks, including fungi and bacteria.

The biology of this species involves a sedentary phase where adult females develop a hard, waxy test or covering. The lifecycle is characterized by the production of mobile first-instar nymphs, commonly known as "crawlers." These crawlers are the primary mechanism for the dispersal of the pest to adjacent plants, making them the most critical target for pest management efforts.

Damage symptoms often include stunted shoot growth, leaf yellowing, tissue necrosis, and in severe cases, the dieback of entire branches. The aesthetic damage is particularly significant in nursery stock and ornamental plantations, leading to reduced market value and potential loss of the affected horticultural specimens.

To effectively manage populations of Planchonia stentae, integrated pest management (IPM) strategies should be implemented:

• Frequent scouting of stems and branches to detect crawler emergence.
• Application of horticultural oils during the dormant season to suffocate overwintering stages.
