Description

The Northern hoverfly (Platycheirus hyperboreus) belongs to the Diptera order and the Syrphidae family. While the majority of hoverflies are considered beneficial insects due to their role in pollination and predatory behavior, certain species within the Platycheirus genus can act as pests that threaten agricultural health.

This species is adapted to cooler climates and is commonly found in fields of cereals and various vegetable crops. Unlike its predatory relatives, some stages of Platycheirus hyperboreus can damage young plant tissues, interfering with the early development of seedlings and creating stress factors for the crops.

The life cycle of this insect involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically laid in the soil or on the lower parts of plants.
