This beetle primarily affects cereal crops such as winter wheat and barley. The damage is most critical during the germination stage. Adult beetles and larvae feed on the swelling seeds, consuming the embryo, and can also sever emerging shoots at the soil surface, leading to gaps in the field and reduced plant density.

The insect undergoes complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Adults typically hibernate in the soil or under surface debris.
