Description

The pink bollworm (Platyedra gossypiella) is a major agricultural pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gelechiidae. It is recognized globally as one of the most significant threats to cotton production, causing massive crop losses in many warm-climate regions of the world.

The primary host plant for this pest is cotton, though it also infests other members of the Malvaceae family, including hibiscus and okra. The larvae target the reproductive organs of the plant, specifically the flower buds and, most critically, the developing bolls, where they feed on the internal seeds.

The biological cycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. After hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the cotton bolls to feed in a protected environment. This concealed lifestyle makes traditional chemical control difficult. Some larvae enter a state of diapause within seeds to survive harsh environmental conditions or off-seasons.

The damage caused by the pink bollworm is both qualitative and quantitative. Feeding larvae destroy the lint and seeds, causing the bolls to shed or open prematurely. This results in reduced yield, lower fiber quality, and poor germination rates of the seed, creating severe economic impacts for farmers.

Effective management strategies for this pest include:

  • Implementing strict cultural controls, such as crop residue destruction.
  • Utilizing pheromone traps for early detection and mating disruption.
  • Releasing biological control agents that target larval stages.
