Flat-footed flies (genus Platypeza) belong to the family Platypezidae within the order Diptera. Unlike traditional agricultural pests that attack green plants, these insects are specialized mycetophiles, meaning their entire life cycle is closely linked to the presence of macro-fungi.

These flies primarily damage various species of mushrooms, posing a significant threat to commercial mushroom farming facilities. Crops such as oyster mushrooms and white button mushrooms are particularly susceptible to infestations, especially in poorly controlled environmental conditions.

The biological cycle of Platypeza is typical for dipterans, involving metamorphosis from egg to larva, pupa, and adult fly. The adult females lay eggs on the fruiting bodies of mushrooms. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the tissue, consuming the fungal biomass from within.

Damage caused by these flies is characterized by internal tunneling within the mushroom cap and stalk. This activity not only destroys the market value of the crop but also promotes the growth of secondary bacterial infections and mold, leading to rapid decay of the entire colonized substrate or harvest.

Control strategies for Platypeza must be integrated. Growers should implement rigorous sanitation, including the removal of infested waste, the installation of ultra-fine mesh screening on intake vents, and the use of insect light traps to monitor and reduce adult fly populations within the cultivation environment.
