Description
Systematic position. Platypeza agarici is a member of the order Diptera and the family Platypezidae. Known as flat-footed flies, these insects are specialized organisms that have evolved to complete their entire life cycle on fungal substrates, making them a significant concern for mycologists and mushroom farmers.
Host plants. These flies target various species of gilled fungi, both wild and cultivated. In agricultural settings, they predominantly infest mushroom houses where species like oyster mushrooms or white button mushrooms are grown, especially if the facility lacks proper biosecurity measures.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females lay eggs on the gills or the stipe of the mushroom. The larvae hatch and immediately begin feeding on the fungal tissue, growing rapidly and often completing their development in a relatively short period, which leads to overlapping generations.
Nature of damage. Larval feeding activity causes structural breakdown of the fruiting bodies. The tunnels created by the larvae introduce moisture and pathogens, leading to rapid decay, darkening of the tissues, and a distinct foul smell, which renders the mushrooms completely unmarketable and aesthetically unappealing.
Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Platypeza agarici. Key strategies include maintaining high hygiene standards, using fine-mesh netting on ventilation systems to block entry, performing thorough sterilization of the growing medium (casing and substrate), and consistent monitoring for early signs of adult fly activity.
